Rationale
Shows students learning collaboratively within a social context and engaging in ELA practices and elements featured in the revised Manitoba ELA Curriculum. Students used language as sense making when talking about a variety of strategies and processes to understand and create texts. Students used language as a system by selecting multiple styles of communication for clarity and effect while writing their scripts and performing them. When designing and creating a 3-D character from literature, they reflected on many possibilities. Finally, students understood language is power and agency by recognizing the impact of point of view on understanding.

Recyclable 3-D Story Character and Puppet Show 1. Students learned about outer space and recyclable materials. For the past 2 weeks, students read fictional and nonfictional literature about space and the sky, engaging in literature circles. 2. Groups were challenged to divide into partners and create 3-D characters from texts using recyclable materials. The pairs chose a character from the story to performed a song, monologue or interview from that character's point of view. 3. Pairs developed a detailed plan and diagram of how they used recyclable materials to construct their 3-D character, analyzed their character, wrote scripts and presented puppet shows. 4. Students self and peer assessed: A. Look at the character. What recyclable materials were used? B. Did you enjoy the puppet show? What happened? C. Do you agree with this character's viewpoint? C. What voice qualities did the presenters use to show feeling? |
