Evidence & Description Authentic Learning. Custom picture frame making and the science festival with ER surgery and NXT Mindstorm Technology.

Rationale Learning in context helps students connect their learning to their prior experiences and directly to the real world. These meaningful experiences are memorable and give purpose to learners. It is beneficial for students to have learning opportunities outside the school as well as inside the school. The custom picture frame making provided students with mathematical skills that they could use beyond the school walls. Moreover, the Science Festival was a wonderful learning experience because it got students involved and thinking about science and careers.

Custom Picture Frame Making: Authentic Learning

Students learned about perimeter by measuring pictures and creating paintings for them. They estimated, measured and then calculated the total perimeter. After, they compared the size of their frames with others in the classroom.

Science Festival Excursion

Students were involved in ER surgery. They had the opportunity to meet their 'patient, diagnosis the probem and experience what surgeons do when they operate. They also learned medical names for parts of the body and discovered the tools surgeons use to do their jobs.

Students used the NXT Mindstorm technology to solve some challenging problems using robots. They used software to program their robots to move along pathways as well as change direction, spin and reverse.
